KON-TEMPT

They say familiarity breeds contempt. The opposite is true with
24 –year-old Edinburgh artist/DJ/producer, Chris Walker, AKA,
Kon-Tempt. The more you know about him the more you like
him. He’s had international recognition with numerous world
tours, official releases for The Game and Lemar, he’s one half of
video group The Directorz, plus he has records on sale in over
100 countries. Yet chances are you haven’t heard of him.

Kon-Tempt isn’t just putting Scotland’s burgeoning Urban music
scene firmly on the map, he’s redrawing the boundaries. He
describes his music making as ‘a craft’ and something which
he learned from scratch. Shunning the stereotypes of the Urban
scene, the bling, the wheels and the entourage, Kon-Tempt
concentrates on painstakingly eloquent, thought-provoking music.

His revamped mixes of Hip Hop and R&B favourites from the likes
of 50-Cent, LL Cool J and Usher have been a hit on the US Urban
scene but it’s his attention to detail and genuine fascination with
language, drum rhythm and lyricism which has won him plaudits
worldwide from mixtape junkies and industry insiders.

Exuding a down to earth, honest approach which sets him
apart from many of his more verbose contemporaries,
Kon-Tempt has a fearless approach to mixing genres. It’s a
courageousness which means he’s as happy to mix Marvin
Gaye as he is Eminem.

And the awards are rolling in. Last Autumn he won a Scottish
Arts Council award which, for the first time has formally
recognised the Urban genre on home turf. With a new album in
the pipeline and residencies all over the city, including amazing Directorz
DVD cutting and mixing at Shanghai and a stint at
Ego, it looks like Scotland is finally catching up.
